'It's convincing me even more that the two-pointer is not a good idea'

Mickey Harte has reiterated his dislike for the two-point rule, claiming it discourages teams from going for goals.

The Tyrone legend believes Meath’s decision to shoot from outside the arc instead of trying for goals when they were still in the game against Donegal cost them dearly. Ironically, a spectacular display of two-point shooting saw the Royals turn a 10-point half-time deficit into a seven-point victory over Harte’s Offaly charges in the Leinster SFC earlier this year, after which he first made his feelings on the new rule known.

“I think it's convincing me even more that the two-pointer is not a good idea because it takes us away from trying to score goals,” the Offaly joint-manager said during BBC NI’s coverage of yesterday’s All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

“I've said that before, and there's an example of it. They're shooting these two-pointers and you could say ‘yes’ you get a couple of them, but there's other days they're not going over.

“They have the people inside who if you popped in a nice pass there's goal chances on, so you kick this two-pointer or you kick a couple of them fine, but then you don't get the next five or six and it's soul destroying.”
