Mayo GAA has applied to host the URC game between Connacht and Munster at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on March 29 next.

It’s understood that the application received the backing of delegates at last Monday night’s county board meeting. It would be the Castlebar venue’s first time to host a rugby game should it be given the green light.

The news comes after former Mayo football star and Minister of State Alan Dillon had called for the county grounds to be opened up to other sports.

Dillon believes such a move would boost the local economy as well as the Mayo GAA coffers, and would help to fund the county’s long-awaited Centre of Excellence.

“Mayo GAA must explore new commercial opportunities outside its current structure,” the two-time All-Star forward said.

"Hosting rugby matches or other major events at McHale Park would significantly boost tourism, generate revenue, and reinforce Mayo’s reputation as a premier sports destination."

The Mayo TD stressed that careful engagement with McHale Road residents, the county board and clubs is essential to ensure the proposal benefits all stakeholders.

“The potential is enormous and the time to act is now.

"This could be a game-changer for Mayo as a sporting venue with its floodlights and all seater stadium, and a close partnership with Connacht Rugby is an exciting step forward for the entire Western region,” he added.
