The death has taken place of former Kildare dual star Mick McKeever.

Mick, who had been in ill-health for some time, was a brilliant hurler with Broadford who was also part of the great Carbury team that dominated the Kildare club football scene in the 1970s. He represented Kildare in both codes, lining out at full forward in the 1975 Leinster SFC final against Dublin, and has been described as a ‘legend’ by his beloved Broadford.

“It's very hard to put into words the depth of sadness felt in Broadford hurling club and the community at large on hearing of the passing of Mick McKeever on Sunday evening," the north Kildare club said in a Facebook post.

Mick was a man who wore the Broadford colours for decades, winning so many titles throughout these years.

“As a player, he excelled for both club and county but those who played with him also testify to his kindness and encouragement to younger players on the field. He was a tremendous role model as every generation of player that grew up looked up to the ‘legend’ that was Mick McKeever. A word often overused nowadays and said glibly but a truly fitting word to apply to Mick because a ‘legend’ he was.

“After hanging up his own boots, he committed himself to the young hurlers of the club and was to be seen every Friday evening coaching in the club grounds. He lived for those evenings and never missed his turn.”
