Aidan O’Shea says it was a privilege to line out alongside Rob Hennelly.
The two friends came up through the ranks together at Breaffy and soldiered together for club and county for many years thereafter. Hennelly, who transferred to Dublin club Raheny two years ago, brought the curtain down on his 13-year Mayo senior inter-county career this week.
The long-serving goalkeeper retires with seven Connacht SFC and two Allianz League medals. He was also nominated twice for an All-Star in 2013 and '21, but a Celtic Cross proved elusive after he played in three All-Ireland finals against Dublin in 2013 and '16 (replay), and Tyrone in 2021.
"To be able to live out your childhood dreams with your best mate and share a dressing room for the last 15 years has been special,” O’Shea posted on Instagram.
"Rob Hennelly is a brilliant goalkeeper & person ...not taking to the pitch together again will take some getting used to. Enjoy retirement ...back to single digit handicap now."
