A limited number of seats from the Cusack Stand in Croke Park will go on sale later today.

Sales are limited to just 250 of the 36,000 to preserve the novelty and value of the items. The seats will be sold in pairs and fitted with a commemorative plaque.

The sale comes as the GAA begins a €12 million revamp of the Cusack Stand which will have new seating installed, while the conference centre, suites and bathrooms will also be upgraded. In addition, the heating system will change to be make it more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, All-Ireland football final referee David Gough has criticised the sale, saying the GAA should instead donate the seats to schools where they could be used as 'buddy seats'.

He tweeted: "Imagine if Croke Park did something generous for a change instead of making money. Gift a pair of seats to lucky schools, who could use them as Buddy seats on yard.....if a child sits on it during playtime, schoolmates notice they have nobody to play with and invite them to join."
