A late Anthony Burns goal helped Loughrea to a 1-15 to 0-16 victory over neighbours Cappataggle in the Galway SHC final at a packed Kenny Park in Athenry.
Loughrea added to their previous Tom Callanan Cup triumphs of 1941 and 2006 with a deserved win over first-time finalists Cappataggle, who were left to rue 12 wides and also had a penalty saved early in the second half. Man of the match Burns, Tiernan Killeen and Shane Morgan scored 1-10 between them in a final which took a decisive turn in the winners’ favour when they fired three unanswered points in first half injury-time to take a 0-11 to 0-8 lead into the break.
Goalkeeper Gearoid Loughnane’s penalty save from Liam Collins five minutes after the restart was another big moment as Loughrea continued to hold the whip hand.
But with Neil and Liam Collins combining for 0-12, Cappataggle remained very much in the hunt until Burns’ major three minutes from time secured the silverware for Tommy Kelly’s men.
