Veteran Laois footballer Kieran Lillis has announced his inter-county retirement.

The 34-year-old Portlaoise clubman enjoyed a long senior career stretching back to 2010. Indeed, this was his 20th season to represent the O’Moore County when his underage playing days are also taken into account. A highly-rated midfielder, Lillis played in every division of the Allianz League and also featured in some big games against Dublin, including the 2012 All-Ireland SFC quarter-final and the 2018 Leinster final.

Lillis captained his county from 2020 to ’22. His last appearance in the blue and white came in this year’s Tailteann Cup final defeat to Down at Croke Park, having won an Allianz League Division 4 medal earlier in the season.

“Although it ended in a loss, ending an amazing 20-year journey in the blue and white—from starting at age 14 to finishing in HQ—isn’t a bad way to bow out,” he posted on Instagram.

“I’m incredibly grateful to my family, my club, my teammates, mentors, and the supporters who have been there for me every step of the way.

“Laois, Laois, Laois.”
