Mayo manager Ray Larkin has called on the GAA to show greater respect to the so-called weaker hurling counties.

His comments come after Mayo’s Allianz Hurling League Division 3 final against London was played in Kildare’s Hawkfield training base last Saturday. On the same day, the Division 2 final between Down and Kildare was played in Inniskeen with no 65-metre line visible, while there was no fourth official on duty at the Division 4 decider between Louth and Fermanagh in Truagh.

To add to the hurling fraternity’s discontent, all four football league finals were staged in Croke Park over the course of the weekend.

“We were not aware until Tuesday afternoon where the game would be played, and the same applied to the Louth and Fermanagh game in the Division 4 final,” Larkin told the Mayo News after his side’s 0-14 to 1-8 victory.

“It would be great for teams to play the league finals in premier hurling grounds like Thurles or Kilkenny if Croke Park is not available.”
