Joe Murphy has been handed a three-year term as Carlow senior football manager.

The Éire Óg clubman’s appointment was ratified at a county board meeting this week after he took over from former Roscommon goalkeeper Shane Curran on an interim basis on the eve of this year’s Leinster SFC. Murphy’s first game in charge resulted in a defeat to eventual All-Ireland SFC semi-finalists Meath.

Carlow went on to reach the preliminary quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup where their season was ended by Sligo.

Carlow chairman Jim Bolger said: “I wish Joe and his backroom team well and assure them of the full support of the County Board and clubs of the county.”

A former Carlow footballer, Murphy has enjoyed a hugely successful managerial career at club level. He won two Carlow SFC titles with Old Leighlin and a four-in-a-row with his home club Éire Óg between 2017 and 2020 before guiding Naas to the last three Kildare SFC titles. He left Naas to fill the Carlow void and has since been replaced by Dublin great Philly McMahon.
