Mohill got their Leitrim senior football championship title defence off to a winning start by defeating rivals Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins on a 1-12 to 0-12 scoreline in Cloone.

A repeat of last year’s county final, which Mohill won in a penalty shootout in Ballinamore, the holders were made come from behind twice in this one to book their opening win.

An airtight first-half saw the sides going in at the break all square on 0-6 apiece before the scores of Paul Moran, Tom Prior and Donal Feely had three to the good early in the second-half.

However, that good work would be undone when a long ball out of defence from Domhnaill Flynn founded Keith Keegan and he sent in the game’s only goal for Mohill.

Last year’s runners-up responded well to the concession, sending over a brace of points via Paul Honeyman and the same player would trade scores back and forth with Matthew Murphy to keep things close.

Flynn got a huge score after that for Mohill and their counterparts would see a few chances sail wide prior to a Wayne McKeon free round off the three-point win for the defending champions.

Today (Saturday) sees two more opening round games down for decision in the Leitrim SFC, with Glencar/Manorhamilton facing St Mary's and Melvin Gaels taking on Leitrim Gaels. Both games throw-in at 7.15pm.
