Laois GAA have wasted little time in finding a successor to Darren Gleeson as senior hurling manager.

Former Portlaoise and county hurler Tommy Fitzgerald will be ratified at next Monday night’s county board meeting after Gleeson was forced to step down last weekend following a cancer diagnosis. The former Tipperary All-Ireland SHC winning goalkeeper had only been in the role for three months after a five-year stint with Antrim.

Fitzgerald has been in charge of Portlaoise for the last two years and was also recently involved with reigning All-Ireland club champions St Thomas’ as a coach. He served as a selector under Eddie Brennan in 2019 when Laois lifted the Joe McDonagh Cup before shocking Dublin in the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final.

The new manager will be joined by Niall Corcoran, who was previously with Laois under Brennan and has since been with Wexford. Corcoran is to take up the role as lead coach.
