'Tally should have run a million miles from Derry job'

Gavin Devlin reckons Rory Gallagher is the only man capable of getting the best out of the current Derry squad.

Speaking to Colm Parkinson on the ‘Smaller Fish’ GAA podcast in the wake of their heavy Ulster SFC preliminary round defeat to Donegal, the former Tyrone All-Ireland winner – who was Mickey Harte’s assistant in Derry last year – claimed the Oak Leafers have been ‘sulking’ since Gallagher was forced to step down on the eve of the 2023 Ulster SFC final.

“I think that job that Paddy (Tally) went into was a job that he should have run a million miles away from, because there is only one man for that job,” Devlin said.

“There’s a chapter to be written and it has to be written for the players and the county to move on, because it’s never going to go away. Look, switch on social media and it’s there.

“It’s on every page. Rory this, Rory that. They need to write that chapter one way or another and then they can move on after that chapter’s written. But until that chapter is written… I am looking at that team in the last 20 minutes (against Donegal) and it’s almost as if they are still sulking. There is something missing.

“That team’s better than that.”
