Down earned promotion to Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League for next season thanks to a hard fought 0-28 to 1-23 victory over Kerry in Tralee this afternoon.
In the end, late points from Donal Hughes and Paul Sheehan proved the difference as they won their fifth consecutive game to move into the Division 2 final.
It was Kerry that edged a 0-15 to 0-13 lead at the halfway stage, with marksman Padraig Boyle on song for them, but points from Tom McGrattan (free) and Pearse Og McCrickard levelled for the visitors within five minutes of the restart.
Another McGrattan free put Down in front in the 45th minute but they’d be behind again when Oisin Maunsell found the net for the Kingdom four minutes later.
Ronan Sheehan’s side kept right the fight though and they’d be all square again through an Eoghan Sands points, and it continued to go tit for that from there until scores from Hughes and Sheehan down the home stretch clinched the victory which sealed promotion.
