Neil McManus registered 0-7 from placed balls as Cushendall edged out Dunloy by 1-16 to 2-12 to retain the Volunteer Cup at a wind-swept Ballycastle.

Trailing by six points after playing into the teeth of Storm Ashley, the holders fought back into the second half to win their 16th title in all. After getting off to a sluggish start, Dunloy eventually found their rhythm to take a 1-8 to 0-5 lead into the interval thanks to points from Keelan Molloy, Sean Elliott and Paul Shiels, and a 20th minute goal from Eoin O’Neill.

But the Ruairis rallied after the restart with points from Joseph McLoughlin, Fred McCurry, Fergus McCambridge, Paddy McGill and goalkeeper Conor McAlister before Ed McQuillan’s goal put them in front. Sean Elliott restored Dunloy’s lead from a penalty, but it proved shortlived as Cushendall finished the stronger.
