There was incredible drama in the last round of group games in the Meath SFC today, with holders Dunshaughlin getting an unexpected lifeline.
The defending champions looked like they were about to crash out when they lost their final group match to Trim this afternoon.
Trim recorded a 0-15 to 0-14 victory at Dunsany – their third win from three group outings – to confirm their passage to the business end of the competition.
The in-running permutations in Group C meant that – in the other group game being played at the same time - Rathkenny only needed a draw against hitherto winless Meath Hill to progress as runners-up and eliminate the holders.
Rathkenny – who lost to an injury-time Trim point in the second round - were in front by 1-12 to 1-11 when the hooter sounded in Navan, but Meath Hill’s Cormac Sheehy dramatically struck a winning two-pointer at the death to claim his club’s first-ever win in senior championship football and in the process knock their opponents out. Despite the historic victory, the 'Hill still have to prepare for a relegation play-off.
Trim top the group, while reprieved Dunshaughlin are through to the quarter-finals as group runners-up.
