Ballygunner extended their remarkable unbeaten run in the Waterford SHC to 59 games with a routine first round victory over Abbeyside/Ballinacourty on Sunday.
On a sizzling afternoon in Walsh Park, the ‘Gunners eased to a 2-26 to 0-11 win in what was former Wexford football boss Jason Ryan’s first championship game in charge. Dessie Hutchinson scored 1-9, including 1-5 from play, while Eoin Cuddihy also raised a green flag as the city side got their bid for a 12-in-a-row of county titles off to the perfect start.
Elsewhere, Roanmore claimed the city bragging rights over De La Salle when Lee Hearne’s injury-time point gave them a dramatic 1-18 to 2-14 victory. Adam Regan bagged 1-6 as Mount Sion opened their campaign with a 2-24 to 1-11 defeat of Passage, while the Curran brothers – Patrick, Cathal, Colm and Brian – combined for 0-15 for Dungarvan who accounted for Ferrybank by 1-21 to 1-13.
Ben O’Sullivan’s first half goal proved decisive as Lismore edged out Fourmilewater by 1-19 to 0-21, while James Power hit 1-4 for Clonea who made a winning return to the senior ranks at Brickey Rangers’ expense.
