Galway fans fly their flag.

Galway GAA is in mourning following the death of legendary footballer Billy Joyce.

An uncle of current Galway manager Padraic, Billy won eight Connacht SFC medals and played in three losing All-Ireland SFC finals (1971, '73 and '74) during a distinguished 15-year career with the Tribesmen. He enjoyed a formidable midfield partnership with Brian Talty for many of those years, including in 1981 when Galway defeated neighbours Roscommon in the National League Division 1 final.

Billy also won a Connacht JFC medal with Galway and two Connacht club SFC medals with his beloved Killererin. He was the driving force behind his club's Galway SFC and SFL title wins in 1976 and '78.

After his playing career ended, Billy managed Galway to a Connacht SFC title in 1987 and an All-Ireland JFC triumph in 1985. He also guided Killererin to Frank Fox Cup glory in 2004, having handed his famous nephew Padraic his senior debut for the club 12 years earlier as a 15-year-old.
