Kildare will play Westmeath in the semi-finals of the Leinster senior football championship in two weeks’ time after seeing off Laois by 2-20 to 2-15 in Newbridge this afternoon.

Brian Flanagan’s men came good in the second-half and netted a Darragh Kirwan goal with five minutes to go to stamp their ticket into the last four of the Delaney Cup race.

An intriguing first-half at St Conleth’s Park saw Laois moving 1-4 to 0-5 in front thanks to Paul Kingston’s goal in the 21st minute before the Lilywhites levelled with the help of a couple of Eoin Cully points.

After that, Daragh Galvin and Ben Loakman traded goals and a Kirwan two-pointer would be erased by the points of Evan O’Carroll and Kingston (free) as the scoreboard read 1-10 to 2-7 at the break.

Kildare sent over the first five points of the restart to take control of the derby and a couple of Ben McCormack points down the home stretch, along with Kirwan’s goal, would see the home side advance.

A semi-final date with Westmeath now awaits Flanagan’s side after the Lake men upset old rivals Meath in Tullamore earlier today, while the other last four clash in the eastern province sees holders Louth set to meet Dublin in Portlaoise next Saturday week.
