Monaghan moved into the last four of the Ulster senior football championship by handing neighbours Cavan a 0-27 to 2-14 defeat in Clones this afternoon.

Garbiel Bannigan’s side flew out of the traps in what was their first competitive win of the season, having been relegated from Division 1 last month, with Andrew Woods, Aaron Carey (2), Dessie Ward and David Garland sending over the first five points unanswered for them.

Paddy Lynch fisted over Cavan’s first score in the 13th minute, but the home side kept their foot on the throttle as two-pointers from Rory Beggan (free) and Karl Gallagher sailed over to usher them towards a 0-15 to 0-8 half-time lead.

Monaghan moved into a double scores lead early in the restart via Stephen Mooney and were seemingly cruising until Tiarnan Madden cut through for the Breffni men’s first goal.

Cavan would see a Lynch penalty saved by Beggan after that, as the home side increased their tally to 0-23 with the help of point by Ward, Stephen O’Hanlon and Micheál Bannigan.

Substitute Darragh Lovett netted another Cavan goal late on ahead of Mooney, Bannigan and Beggan (2 ‘45s’) putting a seal on the derby victory for the Farney County who now look forward to an Ulster semi-final date with Derry on May 2nd.
