Louth’s Andy McDonnell is the latest retired GAA star to make a comeback.

According to local radio station LMFM, McDonnell has been training with Ger Brennan’s extended panel, four years after he made the last of his 93 appearances for the Wee County. The 34-year-old Newtown Blues midfielder / forward is expected to feature against Fermanagh in a Jimmy McGeough Cup game in Haggardstown on Saturday evening.

The holder of four Joe Ward Cup medals, McDonnell played in Louth’s infamous 2010 Leinster SFC final defeat to neighbours Meath. Last year, he replaced Seamus O’Hanlon as a GAA columnist with The Drogheda Independent and The Argus newspapers.

LMFM is also reporting that Emmet Carolan and James Stewart are back in the Wee County picture as manager Brennan seeks to build on last year’s run to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals.
