Limerick made sure of their place in the All-Ireland series after defeating Waterford by 2-29 to 2-20 in this afternoon’s Munster SHC fourth round clash at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

The nine-point win by John Kiely’s side also sees Tipperary out of this year's championship, with the All-Ireland champions’ hopes having hung by a thread after their defeat to Clare on home turf yesterday evening.

Today’s result in Limerick also sees the Banner men guaranteed a place in the Liam MacCarthy Cup race while Waterford are eliminated along with Tipp.

After having fallen 0-9 to 0-5 behind in the opening quarter of an hour, the Deise fought back to get on level terms with Limerick and the scores of Calum Lyons, Shane Bennett and Sean Walsh would help them to edge a 0-16 to 0-15 lead at the half.

Aidan O’Connor got the hosts back in front within a dozen minutes of the second-half, but Waterford put Kevin Mahony in for the game’s first goal four minutes later.

The visitors stayed ahead until Peter Casey rattled their net in the 61st minute and Gearoid Hegarty would follow that up with another goal which had Kiely’s men on the verge of victory.

A brace of points each from Tom Morrissey and Darragh O’Donovan saw the Treaty men keeping their foot on the throttle until the finish, with Bennett netting a consolation goal from the penalty spot before the final whistle.

A win over Tipp next Sunday at the TUS Gaelic Grounds would guarantee Limerick their place in the Munster final regardless of the outcome in the other game in the southern province that day between Cork and Clare.
