Clare have left All-Ireland champions Tipperary on the cusp of an early summer exit after recording a 1-25 to 0-17 win in this evening's Munster SHC fourth round tie in Thurles.
This meeting of the last two Liam MacCarthy Cup winners saw Brian Lohan’s side pulling clear of the hosts in the second quarter, with Ian Galvin’s point in the 29th minute making it double scores (0-10 to 0-5) and Sean Rynne’s score would put eight between the sides ahead of Darragh McCarthy sending over two frees for Tipp before the break.
The second-half started in disastrous fashion for the Premier men, as Galvin got in for the game’s only goal to make it 1-14 to 0-8.
Things got worse for Liam Cahill’s charges when they were reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of midfielder Willie Connors on a second caution – after which Clare sent over four unanswered points from Galvin, Diarmuid Stritch, Kelly (free) and Peter Duggan (sideline).
Conor Stakelum, Eoghan Connolly (two frees) and Stefan Tobin hit consolation scores for Tipp late on in a defeat which will see them crash out of the championship unless Waterford defeat Limerick at the TUS Gaelic Grounds tomorrow (3pm).
