There is sadness in hurling and media circles at the passing of Kevin Cashman at the age of 82.

Kevin was a renowned hurling writer for both the Sunday Tribune and Sunday Independent. A native of Killeagh in east Cork, he moved to England as a young man before returning to live in Blackrock on the south-eastern side of Cork city.

An uncle of Cork All-Ireland SHC winner John Fitzgibbon, Kevin was a latecomer to sports journalism, first writing for the now defunct Sunday Tribune before joining the Sunday Independent. He was regarded by many as one of the finest Irish sports writers of the 1980s and ‘90s.

Poignantly, his passing comes in the same week as his beloved Cork go in search of their first All-Ireland SHC title in 19 years against Clare.

Kevin is survived by his sister Teresa, brothers Liam and Maurice, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
