Westmeath GAA has bucked the trend by recruiting nearly 60 new referees for the coming season.

Fifty-eight fledgling whistlers will be presented with jerseys at the Annebrook House Hotel in Mullingar this Friday night following a successful recruitment campaign. The presentations will be made by four-time All-Ireland SFC final referee Paddy Collins and last year’s All-Ireland SHC final referee John Keenan.

The recruitment drive was spearheaded by four-time All-Ireland SHC final referee Barry Kelly who is now Westmeath Coiste na nÓg chairman.
