Veteran Clare football midfielder Cathal O’Connor has retired from the inter-county scene.
Clare FM is reporting that the 34-year-old Coolmeen clubman has played his last game for the Banner. O’Connor formed a formidable partnership with Gary Brennan for most of his Clare senior career which stretched back to 2009.
His retirement comes after dual star Podge Collins also announced his retirement a few weeks ago, while Eoin Cleary is taking a year out from the inter-county game. In a further blow to new manager Mark Fitzgerald, there are also reports that the Éire Óg pair Ciaran Russell and Darren O’Neill won’t be involved this year either.
Clare opened their 2024 campaign with a McGrath Cup loss to Cork on Wednesday night and are in action again on Sunday against Waterford.
