Downpatrick got their Down senior football championship campaign off to a winning start last night by edging out rivals Saul on a 0-13 to 0-12 scoreline in Darragh Cross.
In what was an airtight encounter for long portions, Saul made the better start to run up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead with Lorcan Harney having sailed over their opening score.
Damien Turley would drive through to lash over and stem the tide for Downpatrick and, from there, the would-be winners began to get on top and raced towards a 0-7 to 0-6 half-time lead.
After the turnaround, Downpatrick increased their lead to three points and, while Saul battled hard to bridge the gap, their efforts would leave them one short in the end.
The race for the Frank O'Hare Cup Cup resumes this evening and throughout the weekend, with holders Kilcoo in action on Monday evening against Carryduff in Newry (7.30pm).
