Gowna ensured a winning start to their Cavan senior football championship defence by seeing off neighbours Lacken on a 1-18 to 3-8 scoreline at Kingspan Breffni last night (Thursday).

Cavan captain Raymond Galligan had netted two goals for Lacken in the first-half but it still wouldn’t be enough to see them lead at the interval, as points from Cian Madden and Conor Casey late in the half saw the holders take in a 0-12 to 2-4 advantage.

Fintan Reilly’s charges would make the perfect restart that saw Casey hammering in their only goal of the night but Lacken weren’t going away that easy.

A Galligan free was erased by Casey at the other end before Mark Wilson struck the trailers’ third goal, making it 1-13 to 3-5 with 20 minutes left to play.

Darragh O’Reilly’s point a minute later left the minimum between the sides and it’d take scores from Tiarnan Madden and Ryan Madden down the home stretch to steady the ship for the Longford border men as they won out by four in the end.

This evening’s clash in the Oliver Plunkett Cup race sees Ballinagh take on 2019 winners Castlerahan, with the rest of the first round fixtures taking place over the weekend.
