The 2023 Cavan senior football championship commences this evening (Thursday) as holders Gowna face Lacken at Kingspan Breffni (8pm).

The Longford border club landed their first Oliver Plunkett Cup in two decades last October after defeating Killygarry (2-13 to 1-9) in the county decider.

Now Fintan Reilly’s men get their title defence underway with a derby against Lacken in the opening game of this year’s Cavan SFC.

Tomorrow (Friday) sees 2019 winners Castlerahan playing Ballinagh in Mullahoran (7.30pm), while Saturday sees Cavan Gaels up against Kingscourt Stars in Virginia and another local derby between Laragh United and Lavey at Kingspan Breffni (both games throw-in at 7pm).

On Sunday, the deadline fixture sees recently crowned league champions Crosserlough battle it out with Ramor United at Kingspan Breffni (7pm), with last year’s runners-up Killygarry meeting Mullahoran earlier in the day in Lacken (2pm).
