Limerick are Munster senior hurling champions for the fifth year running after edging Clare by 1-23 to 1-22 in a pulsating decider at the TUS Gaelic Grounds this afternoon.

Aaron Gillane struck a 1-11 over the 70 minutes as the Treaty men became the first team since Cork to win five consecutive Munster SHC crowns.

Clare had been the better team in the first-half of this derby final and took in a deserved 1-11 to 0-11 lead at the break thanks to this goal from Mark Rodgers on 31 minutes.

Rodgers nearly found the net again before half-time but was denied by a brilliant Nickie Quaid and, after the turnaround, the home side moved through the gears and eventually found their goal through sharpshooter Gillane in the 44th minute.

From there, Tom Morrissey (2), Gillane (2) and David Reidy all added points to grow the All-Ireland champions’ lead to five (1-19 to 1-14) with a quarter of an hour to go.

Brian Lohan’s charges kept in the hunt though as David Fitzgerald sailed over a brace before Aron Shanagher and Tony Kelly (free) each shot over to make it a one-point game.

Ian Galvin also struck a brace for the Banner men in between the points of Cathal O’Neill and Reidy, leaving things on a knife edge in the late stages and, in the end, another from O’Neill would prove the difference as Clare could only manage one more point from Kelly in the third minute of injury-time.
