Cavan moved two points clear at the top of Division 3B in the Allianz Hurling League after overcoming neighbours Leitrim by 0-21 to 2-11 at Kingspan Breffni this afternoon.
In a game that was refixed due to adverse weather conditions yesterday, Ollie Bellew’s men took command early on as the points from Canice Maher and Sean Keating moved them towards a 0-8 to 0-2 lead after 20 minutes.
Leitrim stopped their rot with a Stephen McGoldrick goal two minutes later but it was the Breffni men that kicked on from there to take in a 0-15 to 1-5 lead at the half.
Rian Delaney and Nicholas Kenny extended the hosts’ advantage to nine points early in the restart and, while Leitrim would pull back another goal late on, a missed penalty from Michael Dervan with seven minutes to go was a chance they couldn’t afford to miss as Cavan took their place at the top of the table.
Yesterday saw Longford cruising past the 14 men of Lancashire on a 0-18 to 0-10 scoreline to seal their second win of the campaign ahead of what is now a key showdown with Leitrim weekend in Drumshambo where both teams will be looking to join Cavan on six points.
