Shock and sadness at passing of popular ladies football referee

The late John Bermingham.

Many tributes have been paid to the well-known LGFA referee John Bermingham, who was laid to rest in Kilquiggan, Co. Wicklow on New Year’s Eve.

Aged just 54, the father-of-four passed away after a brief illness on December 29. Hailing from Killinure, Tullow, John was heavily involved in ladies football at club and county level. He coached within the Coolkenno club, but was better known as a referee whose biggest assignment was the 2021 Leinster club senior final between Dunboyne and Foxrock-Cabinteely in Kinnegad.

Leinster LGFA paid the following tribute to John on its Facebook page: “John was an experienced referee that had officiated at all levels within Leinster for at least eight years, a highlight being taking charge of the 2021 enthralling Leinster SFC Club final between Dunboyne and Foxrock Cabinteely.

“John was just as happy refereeing among the younger grades and his encouraging and kind nature was obvious and helpful to younger players. His good nature will be missed on many a sideline in 2023.

“To all Coolkenno and Wicklow Ladies Football, we extend our sympathies at this sad time. May John rest in peace.”
