There was no shortage of drama at Corrigan Park this afternoon as Cargin defeated Naomh Conaill in a penalty shoot-out to move into the semi-finals of the Ulster club senior football championship.
The Antrim champions saw a late Kevin McShane goal send the game to extra time before the same player kicked a point at the end of the added period to leave the scoreboard reading 2-13 to 2-13 and force penalties.
In the shoot-out, Cargin goalkeeper John McNabb saved twice before Cahir Donnelly stroked in the decisive penalty in a 4-1 victory that sees them through to a provincial semi-final date with Derry’s Glen two weeks from today.
Having led 0-6 to 0-3 at half-time, it was Glenties that looked the more likely side to progress after John O’Malley’s 50th minute goal but McShane struck his own major in the fifth minute of added to leave it at 1-9 apiece come the full-time whistle.
The Tir Chonaill County champions goaled again in extra time but it was cancelled out by Kieran Close before the short break and McShane’s leveller at the death demonstrated that Cargin just simply weren’t going away on this occasion.
