Mikey Kiely’s late goal in extra time propelled UL past IT Carlow and into Saturday’s Fitzgibbon Cup final after a dramatic 1-27 to 2-23 victory last night.
Marty Kanavagh’s goal on the hour mark looked to have won it for IT Carlow in normal time but a point from Galway's Conor Flaherty ensured there’d be extra time at the IT Carlow grounds.
Rory Higgins got the host noses’ out in front early in the added periods with a point from close range and two more from the same man had his side with one foot in the final.
That was until the 81st minute when Waterford ace Kiely made the most of a free from beyond 45 metres which somehow found the Carlow lads’ net.
DJ Carey’s men wouldn't have time for an equaliser as UL advanced to tomorrow’s final against NUI Galway, who overcame GMIT on Wednesday.
