In the same week as his brother and six-time All-Star Padraic made the shock announcement that he is retiring from the game due to medical advice, Ronan Maher has been named the Tipperary captain for 2022.

The Thurles Sarsfields clubman will follow in the footsteps of his elder sibling Padraic, who captained the Premier County in 2017 and 2018.

26-year-old Ronan, who made his championship debut against Galway in 2014, is heading into his ninth year of inter-county action.

He was the choice of Colm Bonnar's squad this week when they were asked to vote for a captain to replace Seamus Callanan.

Maher was introduced as a second-half substitute during last night's 0-21 to 1-14 victory away to Laois having just returned to the set-up.
