Cork will be in ‘prime position’ to secure promotion from Division 3 if they overcome Down on Sunday, according to Ronan McCarthy.

Speaking to the Irish News ahead of their home fixture against the Mourne County, McCarthy admitted: “It would put us in prime position if we can win the game on Sunday.

“But the other side is that teams can put a run together very quickly and if you lose a game you can get pulled back into the pack. So, I think you’re better off just focussing on this game. If we can get six points out of this block of games, brilliant, and then we’ll regroup for the next block.”

McCarthy is will aware of the threat that Paddy Tally’s side will pose to their bid for a third win from as many outings.

“They bring men behind the ball but I wouldn’t class them as a defensive team – they put bodies there but they are will to commit men forward and counter-attack. I watched the match against Derry and they took some lovely scores in that match.

“They are well set up, they are solid and it will be an interesting game on Sunday.”
