Derry U20 star Callum Brown has signed a rookie deal with AFL side the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The Ulster U20 winner was selected as one of the best 20 players in the grade last month and has been in a 12-month trial process with the Austrailian Rules outfit, having been identified by scouts last year.

“Callum really impressed when he spent time at the club earlier this year,” said Giants List Manager Jason McCartney.

“He’s an incredibly athletic and skillful player and showed an ability to pick up the nuances of AFL footy during some intensive training sessions.

“We know it takes some time to adapt to our game and we won’t put any pressure on him but as an 18-year-old, he’s a really exciting prospect.”

Brown will travel to Australia next month.

He is the second Derry player to have a move to the AFL confirmed in the past week after Collingwood announced they had signed Anthon Tohill. Kerry's Stefan Okunbor has been snapped up by Geelong, Dublin's James Madden by the Brisbane Lions and Mark Keane (Cork) also to Collingwood.
