Westmeath manager Brendan Hackett has been handed a major boost after veteran Martin Flanagan returned to training this week with the Lake County.

Speculation had mounted that the Tyrrellspass midfielder was mulling over retirement from the inter-county scene but he trained with Hackett's squad on Wednesday night and is set to be available when Westmeath host Laois on Sunday at Mullingar in the NFL.

The news could not have come at a better time for Hackett, as his team are pointless at the bottom of Division Two and have been rocked by the recent defections of Denis Glennon and Dessie Dolan from the panel. Tweet
