So sorry to convey to readers about the death of legendary Bohermeen footballer Jim Kavanagh.

It would be safe to say that no finer footballer from Bohermeen parish ever graced the hallowed playing fields of Sean Newman Park.

Jim Kavanagh first shot to fame as an outstanding young left half back on the Bohermeen team which swept to Meath junior championship honours in 1965. This was a side on an upward curve and two years later Bohermeen were in the intermediate decider. However an emerging Seneschalstown proved too strong on the day.

Back came Bohermeen in '73 and with Jim a star man in the middle of the field, warm favourites Moylagh were beaten in another intermediate showdown.

Ken Rennicks was now at his peak and with Kavanagh he formed a mighty partnership around the centre of the field. Bohermeen made it all the way to the '74 senior decider only to fall foul of another emerging talent. 

Bohermeen had the outstanding Summerhill combination of that era on the ropes for long spells but just fell two points short at the finish.

On retiring Jim Kavanagh served clubs in his parish in many different roles. He often acted as an umpire and one of his proudest days was the All-Ireland final of 1985. Kerry and Dublin were the contestants and his brother Paddy was the man in charge. Jim was one of the chosen umpires.

Jim Kavanagh pulled on the Meath senior jersey. Many good judges felt he shoud have got an extended run during the early seventies.

He possessed a great pair of hands, Jim could field with the best of them. For a big man he had terrific energy, moving up and down the pitch with relative ease. He had an uncanny ability to pick out a better placed colleague, often with his favoured punched pass.

Jim was 72 years old and his sons played underage for parish teams. His nephew John, Paddy's son, is the present very efficient Chairman of the Meath Minor Board

Peacefully at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his son Colm. Sadly missed by his loving wife Maura, sons Sean & James, grandchildren Conor, Saoirse, Ben, Luke & Kadirose, brothers Paddy, Jack & Alfie, sisters Kathleen & Ann, daughters in law Wendy & Theresa, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives & friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing in his residence on Thursday from 4pm-8pm. Removal Friday morning at 10:15am to arrive to St Ultan's Church, Bohermeen for Funeral Mass at 11am. Burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery.
