Ahane GAA Club Notes

October 01, 2012
Ahane 1-10, Gerald Griffins 1-2.

Congratulations to our Under 16 girls gaelic football team who captured the Novice Shield Co Championship when overcoming Gerald Griffins in an exciting game played in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale on Sunday 23rd September, on a scoreline of Ahane 1-10, Gerald Griffins 1-2. In a very sporting game, the girls were well up for this game and opened the scoring from a point in the second minute of the game and pressed on taking some excellent scores from Nicole Lavin, Kate Herbert and Siofra Keane and lead on a scoreline at half time of Ahane 1-4 and Gerald Griffins 1-2. Ahane took complete control of the second half and scored six point without reply. Gerald Griffins never gave up, but Ahane always had the edge. The winning margin would have been more, except for some top class saves from the Gerald Griffins Goal keeper. Overall this game had everything with our girls playing brilliant football, displaying great heart, skill and determination, in what was a superb team effort, from our goal keeper, Eimear Hartigan, to the full back line of Rebecca Hartigan, Niamh Reynolds and Abi Fox, our half back line of Niamh Cullimore and Aoife Quinn, midfield pairing of Siofra Keane and Aine O'Curry. Our half forwards Karen Leahy, Nicole Lavin and Kate Herbert and full forward line of Kate Feeney, Caoimhe Macken and Aibhe Keane and to our young substitutes on the bench who played their part when they were introduced namely, Niamh Martin, Sine Hartigan, Niamh O'Curry, Aine Reynolds and Catriona O'Halloran. Ahane East Minor 'A' Football Champions 2012

Ahane 5-5 Naomh Bríd 1-3

Ahane Minor footballers brought an end to a long famine at this level for our club, by securing a deserved victory against a gallant Naomh Bríd side to win the East A Minor Football title on Sunday 16th in Murroe. Leading from start to finish, our lads showed admiral spirit and determination throughout, and held off the expected comeback by Naomh Brid in the middle of the second half, to finish with a flourish in a well contested, sporting final. At half-time our lads, playing with the elements lead 2-1 to 0-2. Our scores came courtesy of a Keegan Parkes goal in the eleventh minute, after some good approach work. In the twenty first minute Tom Morrissey fielded the kick out, soloed down the throat of the Bríd defence, off-loaded to Jack Murphy who rattled the net for Ahane' s second goal. Brian Butler added a superb point from play 40m out before Naomh Bríd rallied and added a point from a close in free , followed by a point from play to leave the score 2-1 to 0-2 in Ahane's favour at the interval.

Two minutes into the restart Naomh Bríd edged themselves back into contention with a well worked point from play. Ahane refusing to panic mopped up the pressure and were rewarded with a great point from the boot of Brian Butler in the thirty sixth minute. The fresh legs of Conor Burns, John Fox and Stephen Power who were introduced at half time paid dividends, when in the fortieth minute Tom Morrissey pounced on a ball, transferred quickly to Conor Burns in the full line who gave a clever hand pass to John Fox who made no mistake to score Ahane' third goal. Four minutes later the same player received a twenty meter pass from Jack Murphy, then jinked around his opposite number to score a great point. In the forty eighth minute Cian Stapleton drove a long kick to Conor Burns, who rounded his marker and blasted a point to give Ahane a commanding lead 3-4 to 0-3 with just twelve minutes remaining. Naomh Brid with their backs to the wall rallied, and were initially denied a goal with some timely defending by Paddy Morrissey. Then in the fifty second minute Bríd finished the ball to the net after a well worked counter attack down the field. Unlike their previous encounter earlier this year, Ahane refused to panic this time round and were rewarded with the final three scores. The first, a searing solo and shot from Jack Murphy, his rasper was parried by the Naomh Brid keeper but John Fox followed up to poach the goal. Then Jack laid off a ball to Shane Cusack who pointed from an acute angle with his right foot. In the final minute Brian Butler made no mistake when crashing his penalty to the top right hand corner of the net to seal a great win for our club. Final score 5-5 to 1-3. Man of the match and captain, Killian Carroll who worked tirelessly throughout accepted the Cup from the East Board and thanked Naomh Bríd, parents, supporters, mentors, referee, and his team mates for contributing to a long overdue great day for Ahane football.

Lineout: McCauley Murtagh was superb in goals, Colm Carroll, Paddy Morrissey and Sam McCarthy showed great composure throughout in the full back line, Barry McGinty, Cian Stapleton and Shane Cusack (0-1) were dominant and formidable half back line, Brian Butler (1-2) and Killian Carroll won a hard fought midfield battle, Tom Morrissey, Jack Murphy (1-0) , Daniel Nagle lead the attack throughout, and John Kennedy, Keegan Parkes (1-0) and Conor Humphreys were a thorn in the Naomh Bríd defence throughout.
