As part of a college project, we have decided to incorporate speakers into the side of helmets to allow for on field communication. Our idea is that all players will have a small speaker in their helmet and the manager, goalie and maybe captain will have microphones to speak and communicate with the rest of the team. The goalie and captains microphones will be small and incorporated into the chin guard. we believe this will be extremely beneficial for example when taking puckouts. the goalie will be able to communicate who his intended target will be as opposed to currently using hand signals and tactics.
just looking for peoples opinion and feed back. all replies are greeatly appreciated including criticism.

You might suffer the wrath of officialdom if you put a mike in the helmet.
"In all Hurling Games and Hurling Practice
Sessions it shall be mandatory for, and the
responsibility of, each individual player to wear
a helmet with a facial guard that meets the
standard set out in IS:355 or other replacement
standard as determined by the National Safety
Authority of Ireland (NSAI). Such helmets
shall not be modified from their original
manufactured state in any circumstances."
Otherwise its not a bad idea.

I can see the good points but id rather the players make the decisions on the field and not just have 15 roborts doing what they are told for 70 min

Once the safety of the helmet isn't impaired that rule won't have any bearing on this experiment. Has this ever been trialled in any other sport, like American football, lacrosse or ice hockey?

Yes they have it in american football, F1, and once tried it in the belgium football league

Not a criticism, but two comments on the concept.

1) It'll take 10 seconds for the opposition management to get the transmission frequency which would defeat the intended purpose of the secret communications. The opposition management could also send bogus communications to the other team

2) Some tech-savy "supporter" could get the same frequency and use a foghorn or whistle to deafen the entire team.

so far what we have is a concept idea, and your comments are exactly what our biggest worry has been. we are trying to come up with a method of comunicating only between specific devices. so far we have looked into frequency and gsm and the like. we are aware that managers already use similar systems to communicate to members sitting in the stand. so we now need to find a way of keeping this private and out of the ears of the opposition!!

as we all know the gaa only recognises certain helmets and brands as officially safe for use. we well not be altering the current helmets design. our idea is to incorporate the speaker into the foam padding on the sides of the helmet, and likewise the microphone into the chinpiece

Another consideration is the transmission type;

Serial : i.e there is only one voice from the captain or manager at any given time or all team members can input to the communication only when frequency is free
or
Parallel: all team members can talk at the same time. (imagine that in camogie or ladies GAA )

Apart from matches, I could see it being useful in training:

- The manager wouldn't have to keep calling everyone together to discuss tactics etc.; he doesn't even need to be on the pitch (or mountain/beach/road/gym/track).

- He could even play Rocky music through it to keep the motivation up between times.

- And in the lulls, the team could discuss how you got on with your wan at the weekend.

However, I can't see it being allowed in competitive games, not in the next 20 years anyways.

Just curious but how does one hear through a speaker in the padding if the padding does not cover ones ears like all modern hurling helmets ?

You should check out cricket helmets which have similar technology. Players actually talk to commentators live during matches
