Lets say you have a player who has been part of a panel of player for four years. The team has won 3 All Ireland's in those 4 years.

The player in question was part of the panel the first year and didn't even make his debut all year and wasn't even named on the bench for the final.

The second year he was a non-playing substitute in the final despite coming off the bench for one or two matches all championship.

The third year he played all the games in the league and was started the first championship game but was dropped to the bench for the rest of the year making a few off the benc appearances now and there but failed to make the match day squad the day of the final.

How many All-Ireland medals would this player have been considered to have won?

If he has three medals then he has won 3 All Irelands. It's a panel game now, not just a team game.

All of them.

I was an unused sub on a team that won a county title. I thought my effort was worthless.

Later, coaching & managing, I realised the value that a hard working sub brings. They push the others in training, they are the tide that lifts the boat. Kilkenny in hurling have had subs that other counties could only dream about. Examples - Charlie Carter & Brian McEvoy in 2003.

If you haven't contributed anything on the pitch all year then you shouldn't be getting a medal IMO. Personally if I wasn't on the pitch to contribute on All Ireland final day but still got a medal for being on the panel then that medal would mean zilch to me.

I was reading the programme at a Kilkenny match a while back, and there were lads I'd never heard of with 3 or 4 medals. Wonder what's the record for most medals with no matches?!

Not having a go at any county in particular, but if your team wins the All Ireland having played every game in their home ground, the medal wouldn't deserve the same merit. IMO.

a) Its not Dublins home ground, that's Parnell Park. A real GAA man would know that, we've played you there many times over the years, albeit mainly in the cold months. Do you know there are football games played then?

b) You should write a strongly worded letter to Kildares representative to the Leinster Council. They vote on stuff like Dublin playing games in Croker. Literally, that's what they vote in favour of.

There was a case at club level where I played a few minutes on first team which prevented me from playing any football with any other teams in championship. When we made it to the final and won I felt uncomfortable. Sure enough I had trained but I didnt have any input in the outcome of any games and it all just felt wrong.
Since then I have played for second team in championship and have been worth every medal I have gotten. I have medals that mean alot more to me than that senior medal.

In saying that I think at inter county level any player who does the training, goes on special diet, gives up the beer etc and doesnt get the game time deserves a hell of a lot of credit and deserve their all ireland medal should their team win it.

I guess a medal is whatever the receiver makes of it.

Joe Brolly tells a story about when he met Pat Spillane at a sports function/event. I think Pat was accompanied by a younger member of the Spillane clan......when Pat spotted Joe, he introduced him as being "someone with one All Ireland medal"....priceless !!
