How many people can Semple Stadium actually hold?

(Oldest Posts First)

"Semple Stadium is the home of hurling for Tipperary GAA and for the province of Munster. Located in Thurles, County Tipperary, it is the second largest stadium in Ireland, with a capacity of 53,000"

The above is from Wiki. They said there was around 25k at the match yesterday. Both terraces had a good crowd and apart from at the ends the stands were fairly full. I can not see where another 28k people would fit. Either they don't count u16's like some other grounds do or Semple Stadium does not hold 53k people.

Maybe some of the Tipp or Limerick fans on here could enlighten us?

If they said there was only 25k then presume u16s not included.

very valid post jack,

I was at the U-21 All-Ireland final last year, and the officail attendence was 11,000, now the stand was full, opposie stand was 60% full and there were people on the terraces. When Clare received their Cross of Cashel Cup the pitch was full. I've loads of photos of the day, it didn't add up, answer someone is on the take!!!!

I just don't get why the GAA wouldn't want to give the real attendance even if it included u16's. It looks much better for the association if they announce 35k instead of 25k.

It holds 53 thousand capacity
On TV people always think looks full but behind both goals the people were only standing at the bars there was not many terrace tickets sold
I thought was much better seeing them have both terraces opened though as gives atmosphere both ends

Before you'd laugh and say it was some sort of tax fiddle but now with all the scanners and having to have tickets for league games etc that joke no longer holds up

Will the munster final likely be held in Semple this year? Limerick v Waterford/Cork/Clare would surely be there yeah?

Depending on who gets there it might sell out and we'll see if it can really hold that much.

Whenever I was there, they always let people bunk in, squeezing two at atime through the turnstiles. Kids (some not so young) were always lifted in too. It's been a while since I was there but. The crowd would always be underestimated in nearly all country grounds where this happens

It did sell out last year. They just had a reduced capacity because of the floodlights.

I could see Limerick v Cork/Clare in Thurles selling out this year. And if Waterford overcame Cork and then the AI champs their bandwagon might get rolling. Overall Munster Hurling is in great shape.

Munster final was sold out last year. That's a fact. Our club tried in vain to get additional tickets from Munster council right upto the Saturday before the game and failed.
