U21 Club Championship

(Oldest Posts First)

I see they are planning to play off the club U21 championship while there are no senior club games because of Tyrone's involvement in the All Ireland Qualifiers including at least 2 games in the week before the first round of the qualifiers. I can think of 3 or 4 Tyrone Senior panel members who are eligible to play in U21 championship. Will they be able to play for their clubs or will these games be called off.

Greencastle will win division 2 if they can get their men off the drink long enough to play these matches.

Omagh will be seriously inhibited by their inability to play the boys on the county training panel

The U21s should probably be scrapped altogether to be honest, for a long time now it's been treated with contempt by the county board.

My point exactly Grizzly. Omagh have 3 players on senior County panel who will probably not be able to play in U21 so they will be seriously understrength. This devalues the whole competition.
And GetOverThe Bar. The county boards contempt was emphasised when Omagh raised this with them. From what i am led to believe they were basically told Tough Sh*t.

can the Omagh players not make up their own mind? if they are that important to the county team/training panel they won't be dropped, but why miss out on matches? have the CB specifically banned them from playing U21 Championship or is it just pressure coming from on high? if the latter and i was the players i'd get on with playing in the U21 Championship.

SBH1983 so you think Mickey Harte will allow Conor Clarke to play in 2 U21 club games the week before Tyrone play Offaly......

i don't think it should be up to Mickey Harte whether Conor Clarke is allowed to play or not. why must he ride roughshod over league and championship football? mickey "allowed" John Devine to play for errigal in an U21 semi v Omagh in 2003 days after the AI semi final and weeks before an AI final.

mickey will always do two things as manager of Tyrone: he's out to protect his best interests in terms of having players available, and he'll always play what he thinks is his best team in the championship. with the latter in mind, do you think he'll drop Conor Clarke for playing two U21 games the week of the Offaly match?

SBH1983. The point i'm making is that the Co Board should not be making these fixtures at this time

I agree with you. I think the U21 Championship should be played between February and March. It would get the lads out for senior training at the start of the year and give them matches in preparation for senior and reserve football while also giving the senior management a chance to have a look at them. Of course then there would be a debate regarding U21 county/sigerson/national league, plus it's nearly another full year until the start of the Ulster U21 Club Championship. It's a tricky one.
