With so much talk of splitting the football championship, has anyone any idea how it would be done!! div 3 and 4 in the b? the weaker sides in div 2 Longford and louth for example would have no chance as they would definatly be playing a top team!! any suggestions on how something like this could work ??

A solution would be to pick 2 teams at random from Division 1,2,3, and 4 and group them together forming 4 playoff divisions. The top 2 teams in each respective pool progress to a knock out stage as in in a Champions League format.
The remaining 24 teams could go into a playoff for the campbelltommy cup. I get to name for obvious reasons…..

i was going to start a thread on the same.
first, like it or lump it the provincial championship is boring and should be scrapped for 5 years to at least try something new.
i'd go with 4 groups of 8 and 1 random group of 5 for London/New York (assuming Kilkenny dont take part).Top 2 in each through to the last 16.bottom 2/3 into a B tournament.straight knock out in both.
personally,I'd make a few bob (not much, but enough to make the B tournament interesting) available for any team making the last 16,and the same money for the team winning the B tournament. Most teams would fancy their chances in the B tournament and a few bob might give the county board an incentive to take it seriously.
it cant be easy for footballers in Clare/Limerick/Waterford/Carlow to select a few examples to put in all the effort and not have a realistic hope in hell of winning anything.players will turn away even more if they dont have anything to play for.
Not sure how the money element of this would work, but they do need some incentive to make the B tournament anything more than a waste of time.or maybe give them an automatic bye into quarter finals of A championship the following year?

Posted in another thread that if there were 4 divisions (North South East West) of 8 teams. 2 groups of 4 in each

seed the draws, you might get something like:

Western Division

Grp 1
Mayo
Westmeath
Ross
Leitrim

and

Grp 2
Donegal
Galway
Sligo
London

Play each other once, top from each group in "Western Final", winner goes to last 8, loser to qualifiers. 2nd place in the group goes into qualifiers.

3rd and 4th into second tier competition with 16 teams. Open draw, teams finishing 3rd get home advantage v 4th placed team.

Bada bing, bada boom, you have groups with incentive to win every game, with loads of game time for every team.

So you have a second championship where you are rewarded for finishing 3rd by getting home advantage v a 4th place team, so the two championships are connected.

Scrap McKenna, O Byrne etc and have the provincial championship then. Follow this up with the league and then based on performance in the league, seed teams to go into an All Ireland series with group stages, quarters, semi and final.

This might even create a new found interest in the league and make it more competitive.

Just a thought.

Here's a novel idea, why not grade counties into, Senior Counties, Intermediate Counties and Junior Counties, oh wait! thats not a novel idea thats the way it used to be, thats the way club championships are organised, thats the way Ladies Football and Camogie is organised............what we have is simply a complete mess. Outside of about 6 counties in Inter-county hurling and football it is a pointless meaningless exercise. No one to blame but the powers that be.

I am sorry but I am completley opposed to this idea. You get better by playing the best.

All of the other competitions are divided into groups. The championship should stay as it is.Having 6 potential winners is good arock. Not many other tournaments in any sport have 6 potential winners.

How about they tie the arms and legs together of each player on the top teams so as to give us weaker sides in division 2 a sporting chance, do you think that this might work for us ?.

And the winners of both groups play a final? Sounds good to me...
