RTE GAA Coverage

was listening to rte preview on radio on Sunday so condescending any chance of their football panel noting that there are other counties in Munster besides Kerry and Cork?? they didn't even bother doing any research on teams limerick won division 4 of league yet they are dismissed as no hopers Tipperary didn't even get a mention yet they seem to be doing well at underage levels Same In Connaught it's between Mayo or Galway

Agree

I think as the GAA focus more and more (in the last 10 years or so ) on finances then the focus aligns with counties here this is best placed. (Dublin hurling and football, kerry, Cork, Kildare ..etc...etc)
Likewise with RTE and print media for similar reasons.
The rest are somewhat immaterial to the big days in August- so no focus, no need to investigate too much - just standard lines and poor detail.

In their defence, They are right in that there are two counties in Munster with a chance of winning the provincial crown and that's Kerry and Cork,

I don't think its condescending I think its how everybody feels, I will be absolutely astounded if Kerry or Cork don't win Munster. (They have won 111 of the 124 Munster championships between them, Kerry or Cork have won the last 20 Munster championship titles)

All well and good that Tipp have had great underage success and Limerick won D4 of the league, And well done to both counties on that, But they simply wont trouble the big guns in the championship and at the end of the day , they where talking about the championship, I do feel they should give more coverage of the so called lesser sides and maybe make note of how they are doing and give them credit where its due but they have no hope come the summer of beating the big two.

Have to bow to my learned Dublin friend here, I think it's a case of stating the obvious, I don't think it's meant to insult or disrespect anyone, Kerry and Cork is a two horse race in Munster and I can't see anyone outside Mayo or Galway taking Connaught, although if someone did it would be less of a surprise than a Munster upset. Ulster is relatively open but still do many expect a team outside of Donegal/Tyrone to lift the Anglo Celt and sure a rake of us need not bother showing our culchie pusses in Leinster at all!!!

Cork or Kerry will win Munster its that straight forward, I'd almost put my house on that..

You're spot on regardimg Connaught, It would most likely be Mayo or Galway but it wouldn't surprise me if Roscommon or Sligo pulled off a shock.

Ulster, Anyone bar Cava, Fermanagh and Antrim could have genuine hope of winning that.

And in Leinster, I don't care what you say Rich, Meath are a different animal in the championship, Wouldn't write them off completely nor would I write off Kildare but Dublin are favourites and rightly so , But I wouldn't be surprised if Dublin didn't win it and wouldn't be overly shocked if Kildare, Meath, Wexford or Laois win it... Although I hope they don't :)

rte's coverage of football is chronic! god forbid we would get any actual match analysis, all spillane and brolly do is make controversial comments for publicity purposes #brollyandspillaneout!

I actually think Brolly, O Rourke and Lyster are pretty good and complement each other well. Commentators are good as well such as Marty Morrissey, Darragh Maloney and Kevin Mc Stay.

But two bad points in my opinion do bring the programme down...
- Spillane
- Great footballers who are not great analysts

What say you then to more of a focus on:

Kerry hurling,
Mayo hurling,
Tyrone hurling,
Donegal hurling,
Kildare hurling,

Kilkenny football,
Waterford football,
Clare football,

C'mon....what do you expect!
In all fairness, the big hitters are the big hitters and are the ones focussed on! They dont focus on the Kilkenny football team when they Kilkenny hurlers are wading through all challengers do they??!

Noble sentiments indeed but not good business sense for RTE im afraid!

Not even giving the Christy Ring Cup results on the News last Saturday is a terrible indictment of both RTE & the GAA towards hurling in the "weaker" counties. How are we ever gonna build the profile of hurling throughout the country if this is the attitude that prevails? Aren't RTE still sponsors of the hurling championship???

Lads there is no coverage of the Munster SH match between Tipp and Limerick on RTE. I am on hols at that time and its a great day out to watch the Sunday Game live during the hols. How can RTE and Croke Park not consider the Tipp Limerick game worthy of a live broadcast. What optiona are there to see it live? Do Setanta still show these games like they did years ago before RTE was widely available in other countries.

I sort of agree with the original poster here. I dont think anyone is expecting them to tip someone outside cork/kerry, but they could do more than just dismiss them out of hand. At least go through their strengths, form players and new lads. Surely that is just good analysis?

They often dont really do much research. For instance, spillane has tipped galway to win connaght for the last 3 years, including this one. This seems to be based solely on the idea that a team will slip up at some stage, because as any galway fan will tell you, they havent been at the races for a while, and their performances have shown that, yet the following year this seems to be forgotten, and it is the same thing again. Now they could well do it this year, but that isnt really the point. It shows the kind of consideration, or lack of it, going in early on in the championship. In fairness, I use spillane as an example, but they are all the same.

I agree with the Master as well as the original poster. Fair enough Cork and Kerry almost certainly will win but that does not mean teams should be just ignored. There are only 5 games (barring replays) in the Munster championship. If you are a well paid analyst the least one might expect would be some degree of research. That is their job after all. They are not doing it well.

agree with the two posters above

my point near the top was ... stock analysis.... no detail, cliche lines ...back to focusing on Dublin/Cork/kerry

The way i see it is, you earn praise from the 'experts' on the Sunday game. In 2010, Louth got alot of national attention (even pre-Leinster final)for beating Kildare and Westmeath, and reaching the final, but no on gave us a hope of doing anything in the ch'ship that year. Its up to the less fancied teams to prove the panellists wrong, and until they do, they cant really complain about not getting any credit in the ch'ship.

Pk57...nothing to do with praise etc

how about some knowledge from the panel maybe even analysis? anything about the current panel/tactics....
not..."rebuilding"...."young team"....etc etc

not complaining about the panalists saying Cork or Kerry will win Munster as more than likely one of them will win it just complaining that they are dismissing the other teams as no hopers and saying its definatly going to be a Cork Kerry Munster final, there is always a chance of an upset in games involving 2 teams that Limerick could upset Cork being at home and that Tipperary could give Kerry a good workout

yet this is the incredible thing on both stations earlier in the news they both had a 2 minute report on diurmuid connolly court case.
