Carson didnt play 'hurling' he played 'hurley' under Trinity cricket club rules!....big difference! Snufalufagus (Dublin) - Posts: 8100 - 16/04/2013 14:14:05 1368669 Link 0 |

Well can you elaborate on the difference please snuff. I always thought he played hurling in his younger days. Wouldn't be that big on cricket so if you can explain what these hurley rules are it would be a great help. Never hurts to know a bit more knowledge snuff gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 16/04/2013 14:29:53 1368688 Link 0 |

It seems that the Hurley club in Trinity was set up in the 1860s. From what I gather Masters William and Clarence wished to play a sport like hurling but without the tough element not befitting to gentlemen of their pedigree. Something which would be jolly good fun, like cricket. So from the b*s*a*disation of hurling was born the game of hurley. A few decades later Masters Timothy and Edward still didn't like the uncouth manner of the game and decided to align the rules more with hockey as played in dear old England and making it much less physical. The outcome - disaffected players who decide to set up the Dublin Hurling Club. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 16/04/2013 14:50:52 1368709 Link 0 |

Anyway, that aside apparently he did play hurling too with the Athenry team as he spent a lot of his younger years down in Castle Ellen. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 16/04/2013 14:55:40 1368711 Link 0 |

He used to spend summers down in Athenry with his best mate in college Oscar Wilde, whom he later hammered as the prosecuting barrister at Wildes trial! Snufalufagus (Dublin) - Posts: 8100 - 16/04/2013 15:50:20 1368761 Link 0 |
