Quarter final format for the football

(Oldest Posts First)

How does the quarter finals for the football work.Do province winners play certain runners up of other provinces, provided that they win their qualifier game??.I think it rotates every year??

4 Provincial winners in one pot, 4 qualifiers in the other. The semi's are pre-determined.

The system should be changed to the following - 4 Provincial winners play each other - 2 winners go into semi finals - the 2 losers play the winner from an xtra round of qualifiers - its unfair that Provincial winners are the only 4 counties every year (whoever they may be) not to get a second chance.

only one problem there The beaten Semifinalist that won their Q/final don't get a second bite!

Good suggestion but fitting it into the schedule could be problematic.

Very good idea. Would it kill the standard of the back door? Would teams just through their hat at it an say there will be no croke park apperance in a quartre final this year? Its the only chance weaker teams get. It would definatly improve the standard of last ten or so games but would weed out the weaker teams a lot sooner?

borrowing from the Aussie Rules I see. I suggested this previously it is a way of giving the Provinical winners a reward for winning their province. I don't see it creating that many more fixtures to congest the fixture schedule.

What a load of nonsense - somehow the can needs to kicked further down the road - there is something fair about the straight KO starting at the SFs, supposedly better than the current QFs, the Final, or for that matter the Last 16.
Many formats start with a non KO and then the KOs begin at some point - there is nothing scientific.
Take the World Cup - Brazil could emerge from group play with three wins, lose to a team with four pts in the Last 16 - nobody would complain about the fairness -
Everyone is treated the same and that's what counts.
If you want to be fair - then only one QFinalist should come from Munsacht and be more equally weighted with Lein and Uls - merge with five from the Quals.

Might do but it would re-energise the provincial series in my opinion

I think it is fair to say that this is an excellant suggestion, I would add in however that another option is simply that the four provincial winners are granted home advantage for their quarter finals

+ 1 - imagine Mayo v Donegal quarter in Mchale park and Cork v Dublin down in cork - would be great - corke park looks and sounds terrible when there are less than 40,000 in the stadium
