Anyone any thoughts on this? Very few can play corner back with the speed an agility required but similary midfield requires size, engine and a high skills set? In my experience I always found centre forward particulary hard to get right from a positional sense?

Why ask questions that are impossible to answer? All roles have different aspects and I for one wouldn't or couldn't put one position over another.

Full-back. There's no hiding place in there, no-one to cover you and no space behind you. Most good full-backs would be decent enough if moved further out or up to midfield but there's very few players who can cope at full-back.

Corner back is easy to play I reckon. You don't need to be a particularly good footballer to play there, all you need is aggression and speed. You're never going to get the ball, run 30 yards, beat 3 players and slot it over the bar...You just need to be dogged and quick to beat your man to the ball and then lay it off.

I've played both corner back and full back for my club. When you play corner back you have to be aware that your most likely going to be marking a player with lightening pace, whereas in full back you will be marking the target man. I found full back a tough position to play because there is a lot more pressure on you as a player to get to the ball first, and if your man beats you then its going to either end up in the back of the net or over the bar. It really depends though as if you have a strong defense line around you then it can be made an awful lot easier to play in! There's no doubting the full forward line is the easiest to play in.

corner forward more difficult than corner back. all defenders have to do is get a fist in and knock the ball away from the forward and theyve done a good job. a forward has to win the ball then beat their men (possibly beat 3 or 4 men going by football these days) then get a score

Ah sure how long is a piece of string!? Different for anyone, but I've played everywhere in defense at club and county level, so my two cents:

Corner back: Terrible. At the highest level, if you're marking a good forward and the quality of ball coming in is good - you're not getting the ball 9/10 times. I reckon if a corner back wins 25% of possession he's doing an ok job.

Full Back - much easier I found. The full forward is generally bigger, slower and easier to mark. You're positional sense has to be better though, if you are caught out changes are the whole backline will get caught out as well.

Wing Back: Much nicer than corner back. You can afford to make more mistakes, you're man can get more possession and it won't be as disasterous. You actually get on the ball far more and can actually contribute to the game in a more meaningful game.

Centre Back: Similar to full back as you've got to hold the line. If you're centre forward tends to roam you're going to have a difficult game judging when to follow him and when to hold the line. You can tend to get away with playing here if you have slowed down a bit, you don't need to rely on your pace as much.

Corner back or full back, you are the last line (well, bar the goalkeeper). If anything goes wrong in there its usually a score to the opposition if you are playing a half decent team, mistakes are more noticeable in there too.

I think the original poster is asking for peoples opinions. Everyone would have a different opinion on this i'd imagine. For me i agree with one of the original answers to this post. Full back i'd imagine.

spot on ringo, I got moved around quite a bit myself....centre back funnily enough is usually only mastered by an aul lad so they usually dont have the pace by then anyway
at a guess i would say you played higher up the field with your club as a link man on retiring from county??

Yeah spot on! Managed to play a lot at centre back in the twilight years, at which point my reading of the game was very good. I still had a good bit of pace as I was reasonably lucky with injuries etc.

Went away for two years and then came back, at which point I played in the floating link man role. Really nice position to play in if your team can bring it into their tactics.
