Anyone know anything about Ducks

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

While you lot were out bevying I was hard at work and when I finished I had to dig a duck pond to keep the children happy. I have three ducks and going to buy a drake at the weekend to service them. Does anyone know anything about the birds and the bees here. Can I still eat the eggs once the drake consumates his relationship? If so, how do you know which ones are going to hatch? Do the ducks sit on them like hens? I'm sure a few rural contributors can help with this one.

Eagerly awaiting the answer to this one. I often wondered about that myself.

Also,

The eggs can be eaten just the same as hen eggs.

I have never seen a duck 'Clocking' sitting on their eggs, I don't know why this is. Your best bet is to buy an incubator they are loads of fun for the kids. All you have to do is turn the eggs periodically and add water to the reservoir in the incubator periodically. Look on the web or your local farm supplier. Collect the eggs for a week and store them ready for incubation. Incubation time is about 4 weeks, after a couple of weeks you can hold the eggs up to a very bright light so you can see if there is a duckling inside, don't be tempted to break the shell to help the ducklings hatch - if they die they die. Good Luck
