The War Against Osteitis Pubis.

(Oldest Posts First)

Hello fellow Gaels.

Osteitis pubis is a medical condition which occurs in various sporting and athletic codes, but is prevalent among Gaelic footballers. This post is for all athletes suffering from this pubic/groin injury, to discuss and share ways to beat it and get on with your game.

A forum has been launched on facebook, to bring together all knowledge, ideas, and procedures used to beat this injury. If you are suffering with the injury, and feeling frustrated at the lack of transparency in understanding what is happening your body, lack of readily available expert opinion and treatment and ultimately lack of minutes on the pitch; then please feel free to join the facebook forum as a friend. Post your experience, and get advice from others going through the same problems.

Simply search for friend on facebook 'osteitispubis' (one word) and make a friend request.

Anyone with good knowledge or info relating to this injury, please post it here also and get some discussion on it!

The war against osteitis pubis is on. You are not alone, and remember...knowledge is power.

My brother suffered from this for 6/7 years and now, at age 22, has just gotten the all-clear. He missed lots of time, including one single 14 month stretch. Its an awful condition, I saw the pure pain he went through with this. Primarily, running laps upon laps was one of the main causes. After consulting with the great A.K. in Dublin he has finally made a full recovery. Any help you need with this, please let me know.

Not sure if i had the dreaded Gilmores Groin.
Used to get bad pain in my groin when running any half decent pace for around a year.
As i stated before in another thread, I spent heaps on physio trying to cure the problem.
Was sent to gerry McEntee the groin specalis to see if he would operate.
He told me to go back to the kingdom and make it worse before he would op.
A month or 2 later i got my appendix taken up which put me out of football for 3 months,5/6 months in total as i couldn't get my place back.
the rest is what cured my problem though and now i just an unfit player not making the team without a groin problem to blame!

Sheepshooter, I was expecting a few quips about being friends with a pubic problem! The forum on facebook is a means for athletes to exchange information and adivce on the injury, facebook merely provides the platform for them to do this. It is not so much about being friends, more to do with compiling information, knowledge and many experiences in one place, to help create more transparency and understanding in dealing with this extremely difficult injury.

Knowledge is power....

never mind the cynics, it is a serious issue. I remember discussing it at length years ago with an old tinsmiths wife behind a pub in Coolkenno, if i remember rightly she told me that a cure for it was to stand on one leg in the slaney while playing the boys of ballysodare on a tinwhistle to a herd, 4 or more, entire pieball dunkies (sic), preferably during a full moon.

Never having suffered from this awful affliction, i have had no reason to try it, but i hope it brings some relief boss, her words, to all sufferers, Let me know how you get on

I don't think we should get involved in a war against ostetitus pubis until we see real evidence of w.m.d. Look what happened before!!

Rather than using the brown bread poultice I would suggest the "brown bread only" diet. If one can find the very rough variety and is prepared to stick at it then it will get rid of most things

I've been writing a blog on my osteitis pubis recovery. This may be beneficial to other lads in the same boat. The more info out there the better. This is an extremely challenging injury and I hope this blog can help some fellow players see what has and hasn't worked for me. Here's the link.

Has anybody got any experience or recommendations on how to get treatment (physio, etc) covered under the GAA injury fund/insurance scheme seeing as physio is not covered.

All assistance appreciated.
